The Valley Vanguard - ID Badges

Publication · Editorial · Brand Identity

Concept

This project focuses on creating a functional yet branded identification system for Saginaw Valley State University’s student newspaper, Valley Vanguard. The concept centers around visibility, credibility, and school pride—ensuring that staff members are easily recognizable while representing the publication in a professional manner. The design incorporates SVSU’s signature red color palette to create a bold, cohesive look that stands out in event environments. Emphasis was placed on aligning the badge with both the university’s identity and the newspaper’s branding, resulting in a unified visual that communicates legitimacy and trust.

Description

I designed ID badges for photographers and reporters working with the Valley Vanguard to use during on-site coverage at events. The badges were created to clearly identify staff members, helping them gain access while maintaining a professional appearance. The layout prioritizes clarity and quick recognition, featuring the publication’s logo, strong color contrast, and clearly organized information. The use of bold red tones ensures high visibility, while a clean structure keeps the design easy to read at a glance.

Consideration was also given to real-world use, ensuring the badges feel official and durable in appearance, appropriate for a variety of environments such as sporting events, campus activities, and press coverage situations. The final design successfully balances functionality with strong branding, reinforcing both credibility and school identity.
